Studying at the School of Humanities is your gateway to the world! Numerous international cooperations and our flexible degree plans enable you to spend part of your studies abroad. Whether you choose one of our partner universities, decide to study as a free mover or prefer to do an internship abroad to enter the international working world – a stay abroad is always an exciting experience!

Your steps to studying abroad at a partner university

Step 1: Get informed

Take part in a basic information session offered by the International Office and browse through the general information about studying abroad. Specific information for you as members of the School of Humanities is available at our regular info sessions. And if anything is still unclear after that, don't hesitate to get in touch with the School’s international team.

Step 2: Look for a suitable partner university

Whether Europe, Asia, or America – thanks to numerous partnerships at School and university level, many exciting destinations are open to you for a study abroad experience. Get an initial overview, be inspired by our spotlights, and research details in the partner university database. Our tips will help you ask yourself the right questions.

Step 3: Determine the right timing

For most bachelor's students, the fourth or fifth semester is a good time for a stay abroad while master's students usually go in the third semester. If you have other plans, it's best to talk to your program manager. In any case, start planning in time and be aware that some application deadlines are very early!

Step 4: Apply

Depending on your target region, you apply in fall (overseas) or spring (Europe) to up to seven partner universities. You can find out exactly how the process works and which documents you need in the respective application guide by the International Office. Good luck!

What is the selection process like?

At the University of Mannheim, the selection process for placements abroad is centrally coordinated by the International Office. Thus, at the end of the selection process, you will ideally receive a message from our colleagues at the International Office offering you a place at the university of your choice. The International Office will then provide you with information on all further administrative steps. In addition, the Dean's office of the School of Humanities is your point of contact for all academic matters:

Letter of Recommendation

Some partner universities require a letter of recommendation from the home university for the admission of international students. If you are going abroad via one of our cooperation programs and require such an assessment, please complete the application form and send it to us by e-mail.

Course Selection and Recognition

Following prior arrangement, credits obtained abroad can be easily recognized for your degree program in Mannheim. Find out more about all necessary steps and competent contact persons here.

The two semesters I spent in Quebec were an intense and sometimes even challenging experience that I would not want to miss. My stay at the Université Laval, the oldest francophone university on the American continent was the perfect answer to my desire get to to know a part of the French-speaking world outside Europe during my year abroad. Quebec, the capital of the province of the same name, with its picturesque old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offered me the ideal setting to immerse myself in the “culture québécoise”. However, the most beautiful memories of my stay certainly originate from some trips to the absolutely breathtaking Canadian countryside. And don’t be deterred from spending a semester abroad in Quebec by the long and harsh Canadian winter lasting for about five months – back in Mannheim, I even miss the snowy and icy weather.
