Going Abroad
Studying at the School of Humanities is your gateway to the world! Numerous international cooperations and our flexible degree plans enable you to spend part of your studies abroad. Whether you choose one of our partner universities, decide to study as a free mover or prefer to do an internship abroad to enter the international working world – a stay abroad is always an exciting experience!
Your steps to studying abroad at a partner university
Step 1: Get informed
Take part in a basic information session offered by the International Office and browse through the general information about studying abroad. Specific information for you as members of the School of Humanities is available at our regular info sessions. And if anything is still unclear after that, don't hesitate to get in touch with the School’s international team.
Step 2: Look for a suitable partner university
Whether Europe, Asia, or America – thanks to numerous partnerships at School and university level, many exciting destinations are open to you for a study abroad experience. Get an initial overview, be inspired by our spotlights, and research details in the partner university database. Our tips will help you ask yourself the right questions.
Step 3: Determine the right timing
For most bachelor's students, the fourth or fifth semester is a good time for a stay abroad while master's students usually go in the third semester. If you have other plans, it's best to talk to your program manager. In any case, start planning in time and be aware that some application deadlines are very early!
Step 4: Apply
Depending on your target region, you apply in fall (overseas) or spring (Europe) to up to seven partner universities. You can find out exactly how the process works and which documents you need in the respective application guide by the International Office. Good luck!
What is the selection process like?
At the University of Mannheim, the selection process for placements abroad is centrally coordinated by the International Office. Thus, at the end of the selection process, you will ideally receive a message from our colleagues at the International Office offering you a place at the university of your choice. The International Office will then provide you with information on all further administrative steps. In addition, the Dean's office of the School of Humanities is your point of contact for all academic matters:
Other options for a stay abroad
Of course, we do not just support you with regard to spending a period of study abroad. If you have any questions regarding other options to go abroad, please do not hesitate to contact us! We also offer advice on internships abroad, summer schools, summer jobs, and language courses. Get inspired by our partner universities' offers!
Or maybe you are part of the students who cannot or do not want to be physically mobile and would instead prefer to discover international spaces online? In that case, look out for international course formats in the course catalogue and definitely check out the Online Exchange Initiative by ENGAGE.EU.
And if you would rather gain practical experience, an internship abroad might be the right thing for you. For B.Ed. and M.Ed. students there is also the option to teach abroad.
